Marble belongs to the group of the so-called soft stones, it is a metamorphic rock, which is created by transformation (metamorphosis) of limestone, which happens in the earth’s interior by pressure and heat.
Marble consists primarily of the minerals calcite, dolomite and aragonite, all of which are sensitive to acid. One must pay attention to this during use as well as during marble cleaning!
Marble polishing can be done in many different ways.

First of all, it can be ground with diamond grinding technology in many grinding processes, often with grit 10,000 high, to obtain an optimum grinding pattern (polish). Another way to polish marble is the chemical-mechanical way, called crystallization.
Here the calcareous rock is polished. By means of steel wool pads a fluorosilicic acid is worked into the rock. The lime on the surface is transformed into transparent fluorosilicates, which are harder than the calcite in the lime.

Using shoe polish, olive oil, hairspray or other hairspray things to polish a marble is not recommended.
